HVAC 101: What is an HVAC System?

What is an HVAC System?

How Does it All Work?

Modern heat pumps and traditional central HVAC systems provide heating and cooling through the ductwork. Direct air conditioning can be achieved by a mini-split ductless system. It comes in single-use and multiple-zone versions. The thermostat settings determine how your HVAC system adjusts to comfort. Although it sounds easy, the HVAC system is complex. It includes electrical wiring, ducts and fans.

Key Terms in HVAC

The heart of the system is the compressor. It circulates refrigerant between outdoor condensing units and indoor evaporator coil. It removes heat from indoors in summer and provides heat in winter.

Here are some other important terms:

Outdoor Condensing Unit. The unit condenses refrigerant to a liquid form, so that it can move cool atmosphere.

Evaporator Coil: This is the part of the furnace or air handler that houses the refrigerant.

SEER Rating: SEER is the seasonal energy efficiency rating of an air conditioner/heat pump. It is the energy consumption for a typical cooling season. The unit is more efficient if the number is higher.

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency Rating: The acronym AFUUE stands for Annual Fuel Use Efficiency and measures furnace efficiency. A furnace that has a higher AFUE is more efficient. For all oil and gas furnaces, the U.S. government requires a minimum of 78 percent AFUE.
